Starr & Matthew [2006-2009]

Starr: You probably think I'm deluded.
Matthew: What's "deluded" mean?
Starr: It's like you still believing in Santa Claus.
Matthew: No, I don't. Not since you told me he doesn't exist.
Starr: Yeah, well, at least somebody tells you the truth.


Matthew: My dad doesn't talk to me about work.
Starr: You just think that everything your dad does is perfect, don't you? Talk about deluded.
Matthew: No, I'm not. And I don't think you are, either. I just think you need a friend. If I were you, I'd be scared, too.


Starr: Nobody understands what it feels like to think that your dad could just -- you can never see him again.
Matthew: I do. I'm afraid my mom will never wake up again.
Starr: Guess we both need a friend right now.


Matthew: Maybe things will turn out okay. Your dad could get free and my mom could finally wake up again.
Starr: Maybe.
Matthew: You know, I pray every night for my mom.
Starr: Does it work?
Matthew: Yeah, I think it does.


[Matthew is surprised to see Starr at Duke's funeral]
Matthew: What are you doing here? You didn't know my cousin Duke, did you?
Starr: Not really.
Matthew: Why would you come to a funeral for someone you barely knew?
Starr: I figured I'd get an idea of how it all works since I'll probably be at my dad's funeral in a few days.


[Cole's secret drug addiction led him to crash his car with Matthew inside, and now Matthew is paralyzed]
Starr: I knew the whole time and I kept trying -- to tell Cole to stop doing it but he wouldn't listen to me. I could have told some someone who could have done something. I just felt like I would be narcing if I did. If I had just said something.
John: It's not your fault.
Starr: Matthew -- is my friend. And he might not be ever able to walk again. I just wish I never went to that stupid dance. I wish I just would have stayed home.


[Matthew is getting teased at school because he's in a wheelchair]
Langston: I'd say that you, Mr. Joplin, Cole, Matthew pretty much have a four-way tie for the most buzz.
Starr: Matthew? Those kids are still making fun of him? I swear, I am going to go over there and kick all of their asses.
Langston: I knew there was a reason I missed you.
Starr: Well, I can't stand that they're talking smack about Matthew. I'm not going to let them.


Cole: I really did believe I could quit.
Starr: What do you mean, you believed you could quit? Are you saying that you haven't?
Cole: I have, yeah.
Starr: Please tell me that you've quit since Matthew’s accident -- since you paralyzed a little boy that I have known for my entire life. How could you keep using after that?


[Matthew visits Starr after she finds out that Hope is alive after all]
Matthew: My mom told me everything about the baby, so I wanted to come see.
Starr: I know. She's alive, Matthew. My baby's alive.
Matthew: I'm really happy for you. I know how bad things got when you thought she died.


[Matthew has told Destiny that he just wants to be friends]
Starr: Matthew, don't be so hard on yourself. You were honest and you did the right thing.
Matthew: But I just lost the best friend I've ever had.
